Ross - depends upon the alloy but I can't think of an alloy that melts higher than 1100 F. If it's unalloyed, the melting temp is arond 900.

Healing Cracks

A piece I fused developed a crack while cold working (guess I got a little rough!). You can not see the crack, but you can feel it. The piece is 1/2" thick. I'd like some suggestions on a firing schedule to heal the crack. I will re-dam the glass prior to firing. How far up should I go? Do I ha...

You want the floral former hot so that the kiln wash sticks. Before heating, rungh up the surface with sandpaper. Next heat to 500. You can apply the kiln wash with a brush, but the surface wont be so smooth. Should stick real good!

There are three major breakdowns in particle size: Inhalable (> 10 um). These particles get trapped in the upper respiratory system by a variety of mechanisms (every wonder what mucous was for? :D ) Respirable (5 - 10 um). These particles get trapped mostly in the throasic region. Respirable (<5 um)...

I bought stainless stell dams from the link below. They work great! To prepare them I heat the dam to 500F, then spray with shelf primer. You can see my use of this mold at my web site:

What you are describing sound more like "Vibration White Fingers" (traumatic vasospastic disease) than Raynaud's Symdrome. The symptoms of VWF's are: episodic numbness, tingling, and blanching (whitening) of one or more fingers (same as Raynaud's). The latent interval between exposure to v...

Greg, Are you talking about getting a matte finish or a fire polish? The piece I showed earlier was slumped ar 1250° and had what I'll call a sealed matte finish as opposed to the powdery frost that you get with a freshly blasted surface. I've been gradually lowering my temperature and now I'm dow...

I blasted the mold side of a piece of black BE and took it to 1250 for a slump. When I pulled the glass out of the mold, it still looked like it had just been sandblasted. Maybe a higher temp?

Lead is an obvious material to avoid. For other chemicals used, check the MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheet). The words you are looking for teratogen (chemical that causes birth defects), mutagen (chemical that causes mutation in DNA) and embryo toxic.
