Re: Ever put foil between two pieces of painted glass? Did you know someone has a patent on that?

Well, utility patents are typically granted for 20 years from the date of filing. If so, then that particular patent expired 24 Feb 2017. I'm surprised a patent office would grant a patent that seems so simple to the rest of us, and for a technique that pioneers in the industry were doing well befor...

Re: The ethics of deconstructing and sharing secret techniques

Sorry, we can't help you with ethical options  IMO, those are completely based on your own perspective. Regarding your last question, however, if you come up with a technique and I come up with the same technique independently, then each of us has the "right" to use it how we see ...

Re: The ethics of deconstructing and sharing secret techniques

This issue has come up in a couple of Facebook groups, and the reactions have been varied. Basically, they range from your bonsai grower to your bonsai potter  . In the couple of instances I recall, the "tinkerers" as I'll call them (because perpetrators is too harsh of a word ;) ...

Re: Hanging mirror construction

Sandy, don't overthink it. It's just a mirror -- people hang them on the wall all the time with "mirror clips" that you find at any box store  . We have a large one piece mirror in our bathroom that is the width of a large vanity (7 feet?) with two basins and a height from the cou...

Re: Help with creating large multi-color swirls

Actually, that's an Opal Art (not baroque), but yes, it is the glass itself. You could comb it... you'd just be using wider "swaths" of color than what is typical with combing. Enjoy it now, I think Oceanside said they would no longer be able to manufacture the Opal Arts. blacknwhitecomp1....

Re: ceramic molds

If kiln wash gets embedded in your glass during a slump, then I think you are slumping at too high of a temperature.

Still like the purple one the best :)

Re: cracking during high fire

GIven the variation in thickness of the glass caused by the bubbles, IMO, 60 minutes is likely not a long enough anneal and you need better temperature control on the way down. You may have better success by slowing your drop to the annealing zone, increasing the duration of the anneal, and then con...

Re: TAP / Genisys touch-screen controllers

There are apps that let you turn a spare phone into a wireless, IP connected camera (I know there is one for Android, don't know about iOS. Most of us have an old phone lying around...). Also, wireless cameras are very cheap these days... you might want to look at woot! (woot.com)

Re: Frit casting mold

Colour de Vere molds are great (the link above), and they have good tutorials. Just follow their instructions. Once the piece is cast, clean up the edges if needed (with diamond hand pads), then use some fiber paper or an existing mold to slump into an interesting shape. Keep the body relatively fla...

Re: Question on speeding up cooling below 750°F

I agree with all the others, Turn off the kiln (I turn it off at 700 deg F), and walk away. I may open the kiln at 200... maybe. That involves cracking the lid 1" to 2" and... walking away. If it is important enough to fire, it's important enough to let it cool on its own, IMO. I have a da...

I always fuse & "texturize" in one firing. Here are a couple of blog posts which you might find useful:

Re: Kiln paper after it's fired

Close it up tightly and toss it in the trash.

It is not toxic or hazardous and thus, does not present an environmental risk, based on their MSDS: https://www.dlartglass.com/PDFs/MSDS/BE%208210.PDF

The biggest thing is to avoid breathing it.

Nice but lost with all the other videos you can watch on Youtube. I think the value of videos like this is not that they are available on YouTube itself, but the fact that they are on YouTube they are accessible via a common link from other avenues. For instance... post a link to the video on FaceB...

Re: UPS Lost Supplies

UPS should not leave a package unless you have a signature on file with them and release all liability for the package. A few years ago, I ordered some products from Aveda on-line. They were supposedly delivered, but I never received them. So... one of two things happened -- someone stole them from ...

Re: Mounting glass to aluminum

I typically frame my wall hangings to hide the backing boards. That being said I use the thinnest gauge aluminum I can get, it's a bit thicker than a soda can and can be cut with a tin snips. It's backed by an 1/8th inch sheet of ply wood or MDF. I use 1/2" bar or 3/4" aluminum square tub...
