It has been about a year since I've tried this but I seem to remember getting pretty good results by first slumping it over a large bowl. By first slumping it into that shape, the second slump didn't form the typical saddle shape that turned it into four folds. -Jolly

Kiln building book, Bert?

Bert, do I remember you saying you were writing a book on building kilns? If so, how is it going? Everyone, if I need my kiln to be deeper for a special project, could I just lift the bell kiln, place some firebrick/ fiber all the way around under the edge of the kiln so the kiln came down to sit on...

I have slumped some older low E glass and it had some kind of film that cracked and changed color to a light brown tint with a little iridescense to it. Just in case, assume that it will give off a dangerous gas and vent. The low E glass I had was 1/4 inch thick. Wish I had more. Enjoy, Jolly

I fuse and slump in one firing whenever possible, why waste electricity? The trick is knowing when it will work. I find with float glass that it USUALLY works if the the shape is shallow, I am slumping over not into the mold, and the mold will support the glass and not let it 'run' when it gets hot ...

Lynne, the oxygen theory is a good place to begin your research. However, it is definitely not the whole story. I sounds as if your copper has a coating on it (you said peeled off) which would affect everything. The only time I have managed to get a green or blue is when I am fusing a large piece, 1...

To test new shapes, molds, etc., I strongly recommend getting some free used windows. Windows (float glass) does its stuff about 100 degees hotter than art glass but it will allow you to try new ideas that are way out there without much cost. Then if it works, try it with expensive and beautiful art...

Well, 200 amp is the standard here but as long as I am putting in a new service to the studio, I thought I might try to arrange to NOT dim the neighborhood. I used to have my kiln in an industrial area (along with my woodshop) but now I have it in a friends garage. The controller makes her lights fl...

power requirements for many kilns

I am about to build a new studio in my backyard and I wonder how large a service should I install. For you glass people with multiple kilns, what amperage do you have in your main panel? thanks, Jolly

I just ordered a cheap tile saw but I have never used one to cut glass. However, in woodworking to keep a piece from chipping we place another scrap piece under. The scrap piece gets the chips not the good piece. I wonder if a piece of scrap float under your piece would work? It has to be a tight fi...

rosanna, no my elements are inside quartz(?) tubes so they are protected. However the thermocouple looks fine. The method I use allows me to use just a bit of stannous chloride, maybe two pinches of the crystals to cover a 24x36 piece of foil between two layers of float. Most of the gas is trapped b...

Patti, I do put the shards between the layers of float. The larger the shards, the further the deep red will go into the center. The blackening of the copper doesn't seem to occur until near fusing so if the shards have slumped away by the time the kiln is near fusing, then the oxygen can't get in a...

I only use the thin (.001) copper foil. I also use float. If I get it closer than about 1/8 inch from the edge, it will turn black. I will have to experiment with some thicker (.003) copper that I have laying around. -Jolly

The copper is turning black because it has enough oxygen to react with. The solutions suggested all keep the oxygen from interacting with the copper. What is the thickness of the two different foils? I find that if I get the copper very close to the edge of the glass, it holds up the glass a bit, al...

Since you asked....... Just my opinion but I do a fair amount of editing and there are a few do's and don't's.... When speaking, placing 'and' between words works sometimes to create rhythm but in written form just adds space and dilutes the impact of the statement. When speaking of yourself, only s...

You could also try using a brillo pad or steel wool and soap and scrub both sides- one side is usually noticably rougher- which I have always assumed is the tin side. I suppose I should taste it to make sure. slurp, Jolly
