Large Kiln Shelves

Just received my new large kiln :D . Inside dimensions are 28" x 28" sq., but the shelf that came with it was only 21". Naturally, I want to take advantage of all the room available, but having trouble finding (google search) a larger 24" shelf. Do they make shelves larger than 2...

I've had some successes and some failures with pot melts (same schedule for all). The failures resulted in cracks (days later) STRAIGHT down the middle.

I now wonder if temps. >1600 for extended periods can affect compatibility.

Had the exact same break on a pot melt last month. Used BE opal teal, lt. green and YELLOW. Fired AFAP to 1700, held apprx. 45 minutes. Annealed at 980/45 min. then 940/45 min. Slow to cool. Did some cold work a couple of days later, then put aside for a week or so. This piece sat in the shop for ab...

Thanks for the reply Barbara. Hhhmm, pretty scary though if 200/hr is too aggressive! I've recently had two bowls crack on the slump and now I think I know why.

If you can stand one more question, - - are you firing on mullite shelf or fiber board?

Barbara, I was following this thread, and wanted to know if you found the problem. Was it the thermocouple? What were the results of your cone tests?

I use the Morton M-80 to help pop out these circles.

Run the score with your circle cutter, then GENTLE apply pressure to the score with the M-80. Friend turned me onto the M-80, and it's become a real friend.

Thanks Lissa, only purchasing info on google (just browsed thru 2 pages tho). Have a wet angle grinder, have the felt disk and oxide too. Just no clue as how to use it. I've slumped a rather steep sided bowl and normally I just go to 400 grit then finish with tung oil for a dull satin finish. This b...

Cerium Oxide (How to use)

Would someone please point me to a site that will tell me how to use cerium oxide. I purchased some, but it came in a baggie with no directions.

Also, I ground up to 800 grit disk. Should I go higher before using the oxide? I'm looking for something JUST short of a fire polish.

Thanks Jackie - seems almost immediately after I posted, I saw this topic discussed under "Seam Question". I'll try your suggestion this afternoon. Can't really do anything about the number of firings though. Will have to keep my fingers crossed that all will work. I have other things wait...

Broken Bowl - help repairing

Opened up the kiln this morning and discovered my bowl cracked directly down the middle. I know why it cracked. It wasn't an annealing problem. I'm slumping both sections back to flat now and want to try and use the crack as a design element. Question is, what's the best way to meld the two back. Th...

Crisp flat edges

Would appreciate it if someone could tell me how to obtain a crisp flat edge to the top of a bowl. I used the tile saw to round the flat piece prior to slumping. I don't have a belt sander so attempted to use my angle grinder to smooth and even the top edge. This worked to an extent, but wasn't as e...

Timely topic cause it just so happens today I finished a bowl doing what you're attempting now. What I did was lay up pattern bars in basketweave pattern on top of a 10" round sheet of clear. To tack fuse the whole piece and do a bubble squeeze, I damed the sides to hold the pattern tight and f...

Kelly-- Im not sure if it's worth reaching into the kiln at 1000F to save strips of paper. US$0.02 Marty Yep, you're right Marty. Does seem silly, but I was actually trying to save time by avoiding a 2nd firing. After the pattern bars full fused, I wanted to let them flatten out to 1/4". Rathe...

Tips and Tricks

I discovered two things this weekend and I wanted to share them with others who may find them useful. I needed to quickly clean and apply new kiln wash and I didn't want to wait while it dried in the kiln. I used my blow dryer and it only took a few minutes to dry my 12" round shelf. I could ea...
