Sorry for this 3rd question post - please reply to the above 2 as well if any would be so kind. Can I just sprinkle the kiln wash thickly over my Duraboard (instead of using the shelf paper)? I use a kiln shelf and Bullseye kilnwash for a smooth firing surface. As mentioned earlier, I sprinkle the ...

Kristina, optimum firing temp for the blacks and bistres is 1333 degrees so you may be firing a tad low and not curing out all the way. Try a little hotter. If I want to cool faster, I pull a few of the plugs on the big kiln. The little Duncan cools down in a few hours anyway, but I don't usually pr...

Re: Question On Firing Reusche Enamels & Stains
Would you (any of you) please discuss the points of firing the Reusche paints after traditional matting & tracing? I have listed some questions below if you would be so kind as to address them. I have a new oval Evenheat kiln & have not checked it's actual temps against cones. At 1250 whiti...

Yes, thanks to everyone... didn't mean to exclude anyone in the kudos. This catalog is one of those publications that's more resource than sales vehicle by intent... and then, of course, sells product like crazy because the customer feels so well-treated. What a concept! BE always makes me feel pamp...

Just got my catalog today and it's a beauty..... tell Lani it's better than ever. And is it my imagination or are there all kinds of new toys this time around? I only wish there were as many glass videos as there are jewelry videos available in my other fave catolog from Rio Grande.... but, that's n...

Keep repeating.... with endless patience. 'Tis the hallmark of a good teacher. Patience is good, but it won't necessarily get your point across. If a teacher gives a demo, or a lecture, or merely tosses some pearls, and the whole class, but one, gets it, you know where you have to put some extra ef...

Transparency has always been the key issue with glass paints.... there aren't many and most of the paints that fire hotter are just china paints which tend toward the opaque. Transparency is essential when painting a piece that will be viewed with transmitted light like a stained glass window. If th...

I suspect that's why the Reusche black is firing out dull in spots.... I think maybe they messed with the formula and it has less lead than it used to. Or just some quirk in that particular lot. The Johnson Mattheys I have are lead and no-lead both and someday I'll get around to testing those again....

Re: PAINT MIXING & STORAGE
[quote="Kristina"]I was just reading in the Old Archives & have a few questions, naturally! 1. Do enamels or stains get brittle or unusable over time, if mixed with water & Gum Arabic & then stored in glass jars for future use? I just leave mine on each palette.... "pile&qu...

I agree with Ron and Brock. Scrape the kiln wash off with a single edged razor in one of those little holders. Brush off any remaining dust. Recoat (I use 4 layers) and let air dry. If I'm in a hurry I put it in the kiln to 500 degrees and let it cool off quickly in the kiln. I always recoat if I'm...

The muller is used to grind the paint, however, that's not necessary with the Reusches as they are already ground very finely. The best technique when first starting to paint is to do all your tracery first, fire, then matting with the high-fire paints. Also, if you plan to use silverstain, you shou...
