Glue!

I've made a large panel and it's too big to fuse together in my kiln. It's 25" high and about 10 pieces that all fit together. It's some clear and some opal. I thought about use a piece of 1/4" float and gluing all pieces to it. Since there is opal, I can't use UV glue. I want something th...

Bert - thanks for the manufcturer's names. I've done some research and find that Thermal Ceramics and Unifrax make a variety of papers. Anyone know of the specific product name? Does Unifrax 550 or 880 paper sound familiar with anyone? Does anyone sell this stuff in their shops and can tell me what'...

Check my web site. I have lots of information about health & safety for the glass artist. However, I have never evaluated the thermal decomposition products. I just did a quick search for fiber paper MSDSs and find that the binders seem to be latex. Some manufacturer's list their organic binders...

Word of advice about using sand in a sand blaster. Sand contains crystalline silica. Significant exposure can cause lung fibrosis and/or silicosis. Both are pretty awful lung diseases. Recommend that you use either aluminum oxide or silicon carbide. Both are considered to be nuisance dusts by OSHA. ...

Kiln-Formed Glass in Venice

Just got back from a business trip to Venice. Good food, good wine and LOTS of lousy glass! Seems every street vendor was selling these cheap, fused glass pieces with a Murano glass sticker! Looked like the CR*P that is coming in from China, yet they claimed it was Italian. But the people were buyin...

Update on the compressor enclosure. Added a bathroom exhaust fan to the enclosure and did not compromise the noise attenuation but fixed the heat problem.

What we have our smelter folks wear when working around molten aluminum is pure wool - at least 16 ounce. It is inheriently flame retardant and works well. So dig out that old wool sweater. Some of the previously mentioned fabrics (Proban, Indura, etc.) are cotton coated with a flame resistant coati...

I'll ask around about pedistals. Regarding a glass photographer - I used a photographer in town once to shoot my glass and I was not impressed! Been doing it myself ever since. Will get back to you. I'm out of town for the next week. Email me at greg.rawls@alcoa.com. How would she feel about me buil...

Thanks for the compliments/suggestions. Let me see if I can answer all the questions: 1) Yes there is heat buildup. I am going to add forced air exhaust this weekend. 2) Sheet rock will work too, but it is fragile. What about cement board? That would work too. 3) Flammability - I need to look into t...

Quieting an Air Compressor

I'm stuck keeping my air compressor in my studio (aka garage) and the noise level is very high! I decided to use what I know about noise control (I'm a Certified Industrial Hygienist in my "day job"). The results were great! I achieved an 18 decibel noise reduction! If you would like to se...

Metallic Gold Paint

Does anyone know where to find metallic gold paint? I want to paint a rim on a bowl. I've seen the ink-type gold, but I'm looking for something more like paint. Thanks!

You can ask the manufacturer for the MSDS and read the Toxicology section and find out if there is anything "nasty" in the paint. Obviously, its a good idea to vent if you are creating a mist or particulate in the air.
