Glass Craft Expo
I'm going to the Glass Craft Expo for the first time . Also my first time to Vegas. So excited! Usually overwhelmed by huge places and crowds but will pack Imodium and hope for the best.

Re: Broken platter re-fuse
Seems to me that you are correct in thinking it would have been better to fire after filling the bubble hole with frit and then do a separate firing to add the decorative element on top. That would have helped with the trapped air and the volume control issue.

Re: low tech screening
I dug out my (Gare brand) ceramic stuff and discovered they were dried out. I chose an opaque underglaze, scraped a small amount off the chunk and onto a glazed tile where I ground it into a powder. I added a drop of liquid stringer and worked it into a paste which I then smoothed through a part of ...

Re: low tech screening
Peter, I would think the method would work with any of the powdered enamels we usually use. Bert has good ideas on what to use as thickening agents and especially the recommendation to have a high volume of pigment. I do know that ceramic underglazes have a small amount of clay in them and I don't k...

Re: low tech screening
The demo filled me with ideas and I shamelessly went straight to the Martha Stewart site and also Mayco's site. Without a frame to deal with, it would be easier to use just a part of a developed screen (say only 2 or 3 branches of a tree, etc.). BTW, the Mayco product she used is an underglaze. Than...

Re: Shades of Gray III
What an elegant piece! I love the closeup where you can see down into the various levels of the squares. Does that mean that with each successive layer, a square of clear was inserted to maintain the visibility? Not sure if I asked that question coherently enough. Your work is so imaginative.

Re: need opinion
I agree with Valerie on many points. While I enjoy abstract work, I feel a greater sense of satisfaction with them when they have a sense of cohesion. In the case of your piece, I would want to add a border using a color that would accent one of the colors in the glass. Much like a frame or matting ...

Re: Making a mold of a bowl
Shereen, Would you please post your results with the clay mold? I presume you will bisque fire it first and kiln wash it but am curious about the results you may get using enamel powder to pick up details. I made a clay tile with decorative incisions to use as a pattern mold. The markings were not d...

Re: Screen Melt
Jim, What happens to the screen when you get to this point? I can only imagine the timing control it takes to achieve this result but I must know how/if you get rid of the screening material.

Re: Sand corner of mold?
I have done both of those things with no problem. Sometimes have managed to chip a little kiln wash off the rim and just repaired it with a dab of fresh kw and smoothed it with my finger. I guess it depends on how fanatic you might be about a smooth backside.

Re: cloth "molds"
CC, The results you got look quite nice and I must say the texture adds a nice element to the bottle project. I will give it a try. And, Bert, I'm with you on trusting brand names. Thank you for additional testimony and photos. Very helpful.

Re: cloth "molds"
Thank you all for the input. I may try one of the low profile styles and see if I prefer it to thinfire or my kilnwash jobs. Marty - enjoyed your comment. Dana - Great reference. I'm actually more interested in being able to leave a separator in place with the texture being a secondary consideration.

cloth "molds"
Has anyone used the cloth style texture product (think lava cloth) to add a texture to the back side of a piece. A friend said the lava cloth stuck to her piece but I notice they have several different, less pronounced textures now. Seems like if you don't need a smooth back, this would be good for ...

Les, The bowl doesn't look at all lopsided as I thought it might from looking at the picture taken during the slump process. Did you take any measures to correct it? I love the way it turned out!
