I'm looking into getting the heavy glass running pliers Bert recommended, I'll look at that Toyo 600svb too, thanks. I don't have arthritis, just puny girl arms! I don't have trouble with scoring or with breaking regular thickness glass, just the thick stuff. The long but not wide pieces I was talki...

What are you trying to do? I just had a very interesting experience teaching heavy glass cutting. Essentially I placed my tools in the hands of students who ranged from relatively inexperienced to professional. They all did very well. The person who had the most trouble was a pro and he had some ba...

Can't you explain them at all? I'm always looking for tips for cutting thick glass.

Is it important that the piece immediately brings to mind for the viewer exactly what it expresses for the artist? If I have a piece that expresses sadness for me--it may convey none of that to you but its successful for me because I put that into the piece for me. Even if all you think is that its ...

Bob . . . earthy, organic, subtle Darn Jackie, I was trying for outrageous and sexy. You make me sound like a gardener. If I really want my voice to be heard I guess I had better shout. No more mumbling (heh heh). Cheers, Bob At least you got mentioned! I want to say that your work has a kind of pr...

I find this thread both enlightening and disturbing. There is an undertone that an artist needs to have a vision and a motivation that trancends the desire/need to make an object that is aesthetically appealing, technically challenging or personally rewarding to the artist... or what?... you don't ...

"Why are you doing the work that you do?" "What is your thought process behind your work " When I started I was doing mainly decorative work and my process was almost completely toward the aesthetic which I found extremely unsatisfying. Now for me there is more emotion than thoug...

I was just looking for a tutorial on getting started with each kind of equipment; how to use a sandblaster, a flat bed grinder, a wheel cutter, wet belt sander etc. just so the first time I used them I knew what I was doing and didn't lose any appendages. Brad directed me to a site (thanks Brad) whe...

Coldworking

Its long past time that I started learning how to cold work glass beyond grinding and cutting holes. None of my old books that first taught me how to kilnwork have anything about coldworking, nor is there a tutorial here or anywhere else I've looked on the net. Does anyone know a good book which pro...

CONGRATULATIONS!! That's wonderful news for such talented artists and for warm glass in general. Oh man now I REALLY wished I had made that deadline. Don't know if I would have gotten in but it sure would have been great to meet all of you finally if I had. I hope you will report back and tell us ev...

I just wanted to say that I have been scoring my Bullseye blue irid on the backside as Brock said Doug Randall recommended and its been breaking perfectly with no chipping. The little bit of grinding I've had to do has actually caused chipping whereas the cutting hasn't, go figure. Maybe I need a ne...

I ran this post by my husband who has had extensive experience using epoxies for all kinds of things--here is what he said, "You might want to mention to the board that most epoxies have little to no UV light resistance, so pieces that use these techniques should be kept away from natural light...

I score on the irid surface, but chips are unimportant to me because I'm always blasting a border off anyway. Doug Randall just showed me a neat trick. The surface of BE sometimes has a hard "skin" and it can be easier to score on the back of the sheet. Clear as mud? Brock Well it is Bull...

Cutting irid

Its been a very long time since I used an irid glass in any of my work. I'm getting ready to do a piece with it and although I do remember how easily the irid chips along the edge when cutting, I do not remember if I had more success with preventing the chipping by scoring the glass on the irid side...

I'm going to be reiterating a bit here but I think the good news is that my experience seems to be the same as others so that must mean that this process is relatively universal. Definitely get some kind of letter of agreement and a deposit. Make sure you tack on extra time to your estimate of how l...
