similar group of awesome SG glass people

This forum focuses on the artistic "why" and "what" more than the technical "how". Put more philosophical (but still art and glass related) posts here.

similar group of awesome SG glass people

Post by jkglassworks »

Hello,

First of all, let me say you guys are all great! This is my go-to board for reliable, knowledgeable help, so THANKS!!!

I am wondering though, and forgive me if this is the wrong place to post this...My beginnings are in stained glass, as I might guess many of yours are too. I still keep a hand in each pot, if that isn't an expression it is now! While combing through the depths of the internet, I have yet to find the same caliber of stained glass artists assembled in a forum. Does anyone know of one? I am not looking for angel sun catchers or Bronco's logos. I am looking for serious artists.
Thanks!

The American Glass Guild's bulletin board is http://www.americanglassguild.com. There's no cost to sign up, but if you become a AGG member, you get access to some additional sections in the bulletin board. To join the AGG, go here: http://www.americanglassguild.org/.

The AGG doesn't discourage the making of angel suncatchers. But I'd join it if I wanted to improve my angel suncatcher quality.

Hi Joanne,
I recently 'discovered' stained glass town square. There seems to be a good mix of gurus and newbies. And certainly a decent archive to read thru. There is also moderate activity, which keeps things interesting. Here's the link...

Like you, I have one foot in the warm glass world and another in stained glass. I sell most of my castings to either stained glass artists or mosaic artists, and use my castings in my own SG pieces as well, so it's nice to have a few forums to check in on. BTW, If you ever need some really cool glass jewels, get in touch. I have hundreds of designs as well as vintage jewel reproductions.

Warner Glasshttp://warnerstainedglass.com/default.aspx was my favorite online stained glass space for some time. Just looked for my last post.....it was in 2006. There were some great contributors at that time but I'm not seeing many names I recognize after all this time.

Warm Glass is the best discussion board I've found concerning working with glass. My main interest is stained glass but I return here frequently. What I find is thoughtful discussions and professional approaches to the work. It's not all about technique; it's more about attitude. After all, I've never seen a stained glass board with a section devoted to art, content & philosophy!

There are some great folks on the sg boards & I've met many of them but for the most part, the feeling I find here is missing elsewhere. Perhaps it has something to do with warm glass seeming to be a frontier versus stained glass seeming to be less so? Maybe more warm folks expect to develop into top notch artists while sg folks see a more limited future?

Still, it's an interesting observation; I look foreword to reading other participants' thoughts.

If you are really interested in painting on stain glass and knowing-how techniques try Stephen Byrne. I subscribe to his newsletter. I love his brief films, his matter-of-fact discussions. Let me know if you like what he is about. I find it adds depth to my knowledge. His site is: http://www.realglasspainting.com

Joseph Cavalieri (NYC) is, in my opinion, the best contemporary stained glass artist today....his work is amazing. Google him, you will not be disappointed.
