How important and/or necessary is it to vent a small (.61 cf) kiln? TIA

I wouldn't bother, but I would have adequate room ventilation.

Kiln venting is a method of getting rid of fumes and vapors generated by heating stuff in the kiln. If your firings generate moisture, like drying a kiln shelf, vent the kiln. If you fire on something like Thinfire paper, vent the kiln to get rid on the fumes and evil vapors.

Some of the things we fire in the kiln along with glass can have a detrimental effect on the glass and result in cloudy surfaces and devit. Venting is a way to get fumes out of the kiln before they can cause problems.

As a general rule I always vent my kiln to 1000 f, no matter what I'm firing.

Even for a small kiln, venting should be part of your firing procedure to avoid possible problems.
