Mica Motherload edit

Post by Bert Weiss »

I found the manufacturers wholesale source for colored micas. It is made by Engelhard. 800-758-9541

The minumum order is $250. Standard packaging is in 25 kilo boxes. I asked the price for gold sparkle mica and was told $14.25 per kilo. They also repackage in 5 kilo and 1 kilo packages with an upcharge. The catalog is on it's way to me with pricing... You can mix and match colors to get the $250. I can see doing a coop order once I understand the selection and pricing.

Lots of companies buy this stuff and mix it in to their products. It looks pretty much identical to Pearlex and the Thompson Lusters. Ferro's Fantasie series seems to be micas like these mixed with a clear flux.

Hidden here on the bottom of this posting LOL is the news that you can fire this stuff on top of enamels and fire the enamel side down and the mica will protect the enamel from sticking to the mold. I did this on prefired fiber paper.

I called and discovered that the info I posted wasn't the right place, only a company that sends samples out. I edited the post with better info. I'm waiting for the catalog with pricing.

At $6.48 per lb cost for the raw material repackaging mica looks like a profitable venture at $45 per lb.

I could probably take a ride over there and get a visual on how much a kilo is....it's about a 1/2 hr. ride from my house. In case I can be of some help.... Did I ever tell you the story of my potter friend buying packing peanuts at a discount? :o 4 semi-truck loads later-- a good story

The mica motherload for sure. These jars are CR Loo's 1 oz size, about 2/3 full. One jar is enough last a lifetime.

Hi Ron, It's hard to tell in that photo, but are those mica chips powder or are they about an eight of an inch or smaller in size? I found some by Pearlex I had the other day that were about one eighth of an inch and fused them between two layers of glass. Being new to this I wasn't sure it was OK. I also used some Pearlex powder don't know if that was OK either.

These are like fine dust. Pearl Ex powders are about the same.
