Kiln wash turning brown and smoking?

Post by Bharr »

I have been fusing for many years. I have been using Primo Hotline. I recently switched to Bullseye. It has worked fine, but all of a sudden it turns brown and starts smoking. Any ideas?

It does this while firing, but after firing, it looks normal, right? If so, it's just the binders burning out.
Disclaimer: this is what I was told. I make my own kiln wash.

The problem is that Bullseye kiln wash utilizes EPK for it's binder and EPK is clay with no organics. The only organic material in the BE wash would be the pink coloring. On the other hand, Primo uses an organic binder which would turn brown and then burn out.

My Bullseye wash doesn't turn color or smoke.

Are you using fiber paper (like Thinfire) over the wash? I know Thinfire turns brown before returning to white, as the binders burn off.

Weird. I've never seen the BE wash turn color, smoke, or emit any odor. Could it have gotten contaminated somehow? Something in the mixing container? Did it get moldy?
