New Skutt Kiln

Post by Pmasuhr »

I just received my new Skutt 1014 Glass Kiln. I'm very excited, and quite nervous too. I have kiln washed my shelf and floor of the kiln. It has been one day and I feel like I want to wait one more day to thoroughly let the kiln floor dry before doing a test fire. Sound prudent?? My big question is when I start to use my kiln, does one always vent the kiln by removing a peephole or not? My kiln has three peepholes. Just not clear on when to vent or not. I appreciate your help.

Waiting one day:
I guess waiting a day is sufficient, depending on where you live. More humid environments will require more time for stuff to dry. It can't hurt to wait another day.

Peephole Plugs:
I almost never have anything in my kiln that needs to be vented, so I put the plugs in and simply hit the fire button. I have done this for over 13 years, and my kiln looks fine. This is true for my school kiln too when we fire pottery - and I do that because that's what the professor told me to do. So, hopefully the pottery won't bite me on the ass.

If you have nothing but glass in your kiln, you should be fine not venting.
