durability of dichroic for kitchen backsplash tiles?

Post by Richard Dubois »

I'd like to make glass tiles for the accent pieces on our mosaic ceramic tile backsplash above the countertop. I'm thinking of having dichroic shapes on the surface of a black S96 4" square tile (plus clear base layer).

Are there any durability issues for the dichroic? Will it scratch with routine wipedown?

it would be better with the coated side down instead of up, if it's going to be bumped with pots and utensils, splashed with bleach or chemicals, or otherwise assaulted. if you fire clear dichro upside down, or put a clear cap on an "up" arrangement, there will be no problems. i think the stuff if pretty tough, but if you have a tile get marred, U won't be pleased. go bold. put a cap on it.
