if the air is trapped, it'll blow a bubble when you get to fusing temp since it's going to expand and needs somewhere to go.

if it's open, the bubble will collapse before you get to fusing temp (it'll start collapsing at slumping temp).

i'd try leaving the supporting matter in there until the last process is done. i've done similar to large pendants using thick fiber paper to make the hole; leave the paper in until you're done all firings.
