Smoothing kiln shelf?
I'm wondering if there is a way to get a smoother texture on my kiln shelf. I don't want to use any paper or other consumable product (other than kiln wash). Anyone had experience with just sanding the shelf, or is there a better idea?

When I want to get a nice smooth surface on a kiln shelf I use kiln wash. First pick which side of the shelf appears to be the smoothest, then apply several layers of kiln wash. After these layers have dried use your hand to smooth out the ridges. Apply additional layer of kiln wash and after it dries use your hand to smooth out the high points. If there are still too many low points, repeat the procedure again. I use this same method when I want a smooth surface for slumping. You can use an orbital sander to sand down the shelf, but you will run the risk of putting in more imperfections (gouges, shallow dips…).
