Advice on wet tile saws, Gemini Apollo?

Post by lizartglass »

Hi Everyone,

I just finished a great class on pattern bar making. I'm going to purchase a tile saw but am quite confused by all of the saws on the market. I used a mk100 (I believe) in the class but didn't like that it really ripped up the glass. I realize that this could have something to do with the quality and condition of the blade as well. Anyway, I've been looking at the Gemini Apollo and was wondering if anyone out there has this saw and if so, if they're happy with it. If not, what saws do folks use or recommend? I envision slicing blocks that are approximately 7-10" long and approximately 4" high. I should also mention that I will be using this in my garage, which doesn't have an available water source so I am looking for something that has a recirculating pump or something of the sort.

Thanks for any advice that you can offer.

First I would check with HIS Glassworks(see above) If the MK was chopping up your glass it was in all likelyhood the Blade. From what I have been able to discern the MK100 is the Gold Standard by which the other saws are judged. Although i have heard of good results with the 10" tile saw that Home depot ot Lowes sell.

Thanks Jim, good advice. I was just online reading an article about results really being about the quality of your blade, not so much about the tool, although I know that's important too. I will talk with hisglassworks.

I use a cheap old 10" eBay saw I picked up for a song more than a decade ago (and it came with three diamond blades, to boot). With its own blades it couldn't cut finer than about 3/8 inch with lots of water, lots of chipout, a big kerf and a fair amount of breakage.

Swapped blades, and I'm now reliably cutting slices thinner than a dime and more than 12 inches long. It really *is* the blade. There are a couple of saws out there I covet, but honestly, what I've got works just fine.
