Re-Priming Kiln Shelf

Post by ngstrong »

I am re-priming my kiln shelf. I used dry wall sand paper and took off the old primer and started fresh. I put 6 coats of Bullseye primer on and the primer starting bubbling up in places and flaking off. Is this normal? I have primed 2 kiln shelves and several molds and this is the first time it has happened.

If you have left any old kiln wash on the shelf (sometimes it is hard to see it) it can cause flaking in new layers. Either that or you are just putting it on too thick. I ise a hand sander with rough sandpaper to clean off old kiln wash. Works like a charm.
