new cutting system needed--no more Morton's!
I just found out that Morton is no longer making those big white cutting boards, which I've been using for years. Although I've cut back a lot of my production work, I still
use that cutting system a lot. It's not unusual for me to cut up five or six sheets of glass a day--I need some way to easily set up sheets of glass to cut into rectangles, strips, squares, in exact duplication. I have a good circle cutter so it's only straight lines I need to cut. With Morton's I just adjust a metal bar and secure the glass and cut away. How do others do it? Thanks! Kate

Morton is making an interlocking grid system. Two per pack so you'd need 2 packs to make a large grid surface. Creator's Stained Glass also makes a 4 pack and a 6 pack and works with all the Morton products.

Check out the grid light diffusers for fluorescent tube lights at your local building supply centre.

You would need to mount that to some sort of base otherwise everytime you picked it up the glass shards that have fallen into the spaces would just end up on your workspace.Kevin Midgley wrote:Check out the grid light diffusers for fluorescent tube lights at your local building supply centre.

If all you want to do is to cut straight lines, Aquila glass school in Portland has a very good system.

My (small) Tap has them in stock. I found this link (they're the Egg Crate version):AndyT wrote:I couldn't find anything at Tap that even came close to the Morton boards.Laurie Spray wrote:tap plastics......they have large and larger boards that fit all the parts

I've also seen them at Lowes and Home Depot.

Searched the entire site and couldn't find anything that looked like the Morton cutting surfaces.

I kind of like the open back on the tap plastics board. Clean up is so easy. Just pick up the board and brush off the table into a trash can.

Do these cut down for smaller sizes well? What do you cut them with?

Re: new cutting system needed--no more Morton's!
I bought the smaller Morton cutting boards, which attach together. Haven't used them yet because now I see that I need to buy another 2 to make a big board. So I'm still not sure how well they'll work, but I will try Tap before I buy the other two Morton boards. And thanks Jim for all the information, next trip to Portland and I'll stop at Tap's. Thanks for all the feedback on this problem, since it did give me another gray hair or two. When I first started fusing glass I used to do all my cutting on the floor with a metal edge and I didn't want to do that ever again! Thanks again, Kate

I'm also looking for a new cutting system. I'm thinking of one of those "wall mounted" cutters.(I've got a good saw for smaller pieces, but struggle with full sheets.) Best place to buy one? Any thoughts or advice on those?
