Screening frit

My frit collection is growing, a good thing I have a kitchen strainer I use like a gold miner to sort medium sized frit, it has perfect sized chicken wire mini holes. Any suggestion for screening that will sort out finer sizes? Traditional window screen just sorts powder...ideas? Tia!

Screens are made in a complete range of exact sizes from superfine on up. 2 industries that utilize screens are potters and gardeners. I have a set of loam screens I like to use when sorting mid sized frits. They were not expensive. Go on either Bullseye or 96 and see what mesh size they use to grade the frits they sell. Look for those sizes. Google screen mesh sizes to look at charts that show the opening sizes of various screens. Thompson enamel sells finer mesh screens for sifting on frits.

Frits are rated by a range of mesh sizes. So 80/200 would be everything that falls through the 200 and doesn't fall through the 80. This sort of grading will remove fines and yield the best grade of frits. I picked those numbers as an arbitrary pair.

I made a simple set of screen sifters. I bought 4 cheap ($1) picture frames at Michaels and hot glued different size screening that I had (largest is 5mm). You could also make some small wood boxes and do the same - but the picture frames were fast. I stack them on top of each other and sift the crushed glass through. What's left on the top I will crush and sift again. (I drag a 2 x 2" piece of glass over the screen to get the fine pieces out of the mesh.) I bought 100s of small 2 oz jars off the web and have them sorted by color. It's very simple and gives me a nice selection of sizes and colors for accenting.

Jeanne, I was thinkg same as I have a stack of frames and want to mix some home made color combos. Off to Lowes for some screen scraps!

I was given the Aanraku Frit Sifters. They are a bit pricey to buy, but they are a convenient size and work well.

go to the the dollar store. I have a flour sifter that gives me medium frit and they have reusable coffee filters that will screen out the powder...a holey soup ladle will get out your big chunks, mosiac size. works great, you don't have to build anything and all for $3-4 dollars!
