Fused disk = what would you do??

Post by Eryc F. »

I'm stuck! :) Here's the background:

I did a pattern bar, and it came out pretty good, although it curved slightly on the edges. No big deal, I know how to fix that next time.

I sliced, and finally fused in a white circle. I cut a strip out of the white to leave a channel for the pattern slice. I used a clear piece on the bottom when i fused. Because the edges of the bar were curved, I had slight "issues" at the edges of the circle.

To fix the uneven edge, I trimmed off around the edge of the circle to fix my "issues".

The recommeded diameter for my mold is 4.5 to 4.75. It's a small, deep candy dish type umbrella mold.

Because I had to trim around the circle with my ring saw the disk is about 4.2 in diameter which is a little smaller than recommended for the umbrella mold. I fused it with the clear on the bottom so I have a slight paper pattern matte finish on the bottom from the Papyros. I was experimenting - don't judge! #-o

Because I trimmed it, the circle has a flat edge. So - if I slump it as is - when it slumps the flat edge will end up facing almost up, and the temp won't be enough to fire polish the edge anyway. Not what I'm going for.

Ideally I'd like the clear side up, and nicely rounded edges.

Basically, I have a disk (system 96), 4.2 in diameter, .25 thick, with flat sides, color on one side, clear on the other.

So I have options:

Re-fuse as is, then slump
or
Flip and re-fuse, then slump
or
Slump into the mold with a full fuse schedule
or
Cap with thin clear (on already clear side or white/bar side?) and re-fuse, then slump
or
Cap with thin clear that's .25 bigger than the circle (which side?) and re-fuse (maybe increasing the diameter a bit?), then slump

I know that's a lot! My apologies, and thanks in advance. I'm new to pattern bars, just feeling my way.

It is always easier to help people when there is a photo. Try to post one. I have no idea what an umbrella mold is.....

The glass is on the left - would a different angle be better?

The light/flash did weird things! It's not cracked, and it's a circle, not lopsided! Must have been the angle. Top view:

Eryc.....
First.....you will always have a "matt" surface that is on the back of your glass when you use shelf paper.
I noticed on the side view of your glass it seems to have a sharp edge. Before you slump you need to use a grinder with a fine bit to get those scratched minimized and soften that sharp edge. What goes into a slump comes out as in....if it is sharp it will come out sharp as a slump firing is "usually" not hot enough to soften it. My saying to my students is "garbage in garbage out".
Since you cut it out with a ring saw it might benefit from another fuse firing unless you can work the edges with a grinder. If you are going to do another full fuse you still need to get all the grit off the edges....again with a fine grinder bit or you will have a remaining haze on the edge.
I would never slump into a mold with a full fuse schedule.

What if I did this:

Step 1: Rework the edge to take the grit off.

Step 2: Full fuse it upside down to turn the matt surface to glossy, which then becomes the top.

Step 3: Slump fuse it into the mold.

Would that work?

sure...if you like the bottom as the top. Keep in mind that when you turn the gloss side down and refuse it will then become matt.

Well ok! It's a candy dish!

Pardon the odd camera flash marks. And the handful of air bubbles that showed up like an uninvited guest to the party, but heck, it was an experiment.

Overall, I'm pleased!
