cutting squares out of circles

I know that there is a formula in the archives, but I can't find it.

A formula to determine the maximum square out of a circle.

Ie 12" diameter circle will get a ?? square

A 12 inch diameter means the square can only be 12 inches from one corner to its opposite (the diagonal). Coincidentally, that would be the hypotenuse of a right triangle--what you want to find is the length of one of the legs of that triangle. If you dredge up your old geometry books, you'll find a-squared + b-squared = c-squared, where c-squared is the hypotenuse of a right triangle. Both legs should be the same length, so...

a^2 + b^2 =12^2
a^2 + b^2 =144
a^2=72

a= sqrt of 72

so a=8.5 or thereabouts

I'm doing this in my head, so somebody please check my math...and there may be an easier way to find this, that's just the only one that occurred to me.

I've never had it to lose .

I think if someone would have taught me with *practical* examples, it might have stuck. They did; it didn't. I don't care what time the train leaving Chicago meets the one leaving Las Vegas if one is carry purple unicorns and the other is empty.

2) I can't imagine what someone would want to cut a square out of a circle. What was that about???

This comes in very handy when you're shopping for a "round" kiln or shelf, and want to know the maximun size of a square piece that you can fit in it or on it.

Valerie, if you knew how backed up Hwy 26 going East from Hillsboro through the tunnel into Portland can be at times, you might forgo running over to Bullseye for a sheet of glass and try to make do with what you had as well.

Normally, without traffic on Hwy 26, I can get all the way into Bullseye in 20 min.
That said, I have had it take me 45 min to get to pdx, and another 20 min to get to BE. :>)
