I really want a glory hole in Paradise.

I'm interested to know who of us has built a cubic glory hole utilizing a ribbon burner. I had planned to build a top hat first to compliment what little I have but am now deeply inclined to build my glory hole first. Tom Ash from the other Brad's board described his fairly well, but what I'm after is smiles on the dial to tell me which way to go with the final design. Thankyou all. - Haydo

Hey Haydo,
What part of QLD are you in?If you are near the S/East you could visit a few of the glassblowers around Noosa/Eumundi who probably would love to chat about their glory holes.They can be real gas-guzzlers if not done well.

Ive built a few, not with a ribbon-burner yet though, but a few principles will be universal.
Firstly,what sort of work will you be doing, this will determine how wide, high and deep etc, it needs to be.
How will the doors work,how even do you need the heat,can any spillage or crud fall into the burner jets or L.N.T's(Little Nozzle Thingo's)?
i would build with a shetmetal skin containing a few layers of high-temp ceramic fibre or board(about 1300'C), coat with a few layers of ceramic shell(zircon and rigidiser), floor from a castable or kiln-shelf to protect against spatter or spillage. Kiln shelf wont like the thermal shock of a fast heat-up as much.
Local gas-code, fire safety and ventilation in your studio are important areas to be considered also.
we are travelling thru "paradise" in July,Via Plenty H/way from Alice Springs-through Birdsville, Charleville to Brisbane.Will need a 4x then!

Eumundi is eight hours away if I ever want to get there fast. I've been to the studio once before and found them very helpful. Because I only want to make cane for murrina and maybe a roll-up or two down the track I'm hoping to keep it small.
I'll base my design on Tom Ash's pneumatic parabolic door version, apparently in the states some people are saving big money on gas. Thanks for the info. Gerry. By the way how many pizza's did you eat that night in Margaret River, you should have tapped in for the gas.-Haydo.

How big is the ribbon burner?Thats got to be the starting point if you have it already.
If not,you may only need a smaller gloryhole for murrine and canes ,without a "fancy" door , than you would need for roll-ups, where pneumatics and a bigger chamber would be needed.Think of the gas.

Pizza's?We ordered a half for each of you, then you guys decided you werent hungry...So Colin Reid ate them all, never seen anything like it.

Did you do the Emma Camden kilncasting workshop?i hope you had your notebook at that pizza dinner, there were 2 of the best kilncasters in the universe , pizza, beer & wine at your fingertips that night, you students must have been in heaven ........Did Ruth send you the CD of images? maybee you could post one to this BB
Colin Reid stayed after the Ausglass conference, did a lot of diving off our limestone coast, had some really interesting shells,it would be interesting to see if they are influencing his current work.

Where are you near? Bundy?Rocky?
