narrow rims on drop ring vases

I have been experimenting with the width of the rim on drop ring vases. If I make the disk the full width of the ring, all is well. If I make it much narrower, I end up having the disk fall fully or partially through the hole. Well, I got my GlassCraftsman magazine yesterday, and read the article on drop rings by Brad Walker. There is the teaser for cutting off the rim to be discussed in upcoming articles. Can I get a preview on how that goes?
