What is the best way to fuse a square with sides

I would like to fuse a square or rectangle plate with 1/2" (?) sides for a mini zen garden. I thought that if I cut and kiln washed a fiberboard square, built my sides around it like you would for a picture frame, then put on the Bottom layer ....temporarily being the top, then ramped up 200dph
hold at 1100 then 200dph to 1350, hold . could or would this work?
I have a square plate slumper but would not be able to have the tall sides I am looking for. These things always sound so good in your head, then reality steps up to the plate
