I saw in the archive several different mixes for kiln wash, is the mixture
according to weight or volume?

The recipes that I know are by weight. 50/50 or 80% alumina/20% EPK

There is probably a pretty big difference between weight and volume. On the other hand if both of those formulas work it isn't rocket science.

Yeah, think of it as a water based paint. You can thin it all you like, but you still have to put enough coats on to properly prepare the shelf. It's the solids left, after the water is gone, that you're concerned about. A quick rule of thumb for firing 90 and 96 glasses on mullite, is that you should not be able to see any of the colour of the kiln shelf through your coating. I apply 8 to 12 coats of relatively thin kiln wash to achieve this. Brock

Thanks,
I will try the weight formula first and see how it works.
