BE Mold.....cracked
I just had a BE bowl mold crack while firing off the first applications of BE kiln wash. Hairline crack across the bottom of the mold, through one of the vent holes. Temp not higher than 500, and since it cooled the crack is invisible. It stayed in the curve of the bottom, did not extend up the sides of the bowl. What are the odds it will stay together for slumping? Should I use something like kiln repair/firebrick cement to "patch over" the crack on the underside of the mold? Is this an unusual happening, or not? The molds aren't cheap, so any suggestions appreciated. ( I've got two other BE bowl molds, one the same as the one that cracked, another more shallow. No problems with either of them.) Thanks for any info/comments.
i had a BE mold that was cracked when i got it. the crack was so fine, i almost didnt notice it before i put kilnwash on. luckily, i did notice it. BE sent me another mold, and also told me the cracked mold might work for awhile, anyway. i'm still using it, and so far, it hasnt split. the hairline is still a hairline. maybe yours had a flaw in it. i'd talk to BE about it, and see what they say. they were certainly very fair with me, no questions asked. good luck! kitty.
