Does anyone have a suggestion for making glass bookends without making a mold? I've never worked with really thick glass before.

Aftosa, and I'm sure other suppliers, make wooden bookends in which you glue fused glass tiles:

cut out the interior portion of an IFB, line it with fiber or treat it with kiln wash, and do a pot melt into it. should end up being about 3" X 5-6"" and 2" thick. anneal well. alter the shape you cut out if you want somethin a little different. use 2 bricks held together with a ss clamp if you want to go larger. takes about 10 min.

Hate to say it cause I do like Aftosa for some items but I have seen these bookends. Cheezy is the word that comes to mind. Don't waste nice glass on them!
