Harmful fumes

I've read a lot about the need for proper studio ventilation, especially in basements with low ceilings.
My question is... What exactly is the source of potentially harmful fumes? Fumes from the kiln shelf primer when venting??? I am concerned about causing long-term damage to my lungs...
Also, how long can one peek through the kiln viewing window using protective eyeware without causing any long-term problems to one's vision?:?:
