Hello!

I would like to make a particular shape mold of stainless steel. It will need welded joints. What type of stainless is best to use in a kiln? 303, 304, 316, other? Can plain steel be used if it's lined with fiber paper? Can carbon steel be used?

p.s. has anyone ever used a carbon steel wok to slump? (just ran across some and thought i'd ask )

I have used a regular steel wok for many years. I just coat it well with kiln wash. it will flake some but can usually be brushed off with no problem. I've also used all types of stainless, including stainless exhaust pipes, barware, cheap mixing bowls, grill parts, etc. I also have a large drop out mold made from 1/4" cold rolled steel plate that I coat with kiln wash or shelf paper. A lot of what you can use may be determined by the finish you want on the finished piece.

If you can get it, use 316. It's designed for high temperature use.
