How open should the kiln be

Hello everybody'

I am firing with glues and staff which has bad fumes which should be ventilated. It was advised to keep the kiln open to let the fumes out.

I am using my paragon kiln 1 7" dia. It has a new lid , I believe it is made of fiber. It seems to have burnt at the edges when I kept the lid open, the edges of the lid are black.... therefore I am worried that by having the kiln lid open like this, I am damaging it. Can I have the lid open only 1/4" ? Is this enough to ventilate the kiln?

I'd be grateful for your remarks.
Many thanks in advance
Havi

And a very happy new year to all of you - - -
May you be written and signed for good healthy life....

Yes, 1/4" should be enough. The black residue is from contaminants that haven't totally burned off. It will burn off in subsequent firings.

Thanks,Brad
However, I am not worried about the color of the lid, as much as I am worried that the lid is getting ruined by being fired like this.

Can you comment on this, Brad? Will the lid be warped being exposed directly to the heat?

I don't believe the lid would be damaged in any way.
