Bottle Slumping: Labels on gift shop item had hard gloss on top of paper lables?

I was in a gift shop recently and happened upon slumped bottles that had paper labels under a hard gloss coating. What is this coating?
The coating felt enough like glass to have me scratching my head. Further, I could not detect an edge seam to the coating. Either it feather's out nicely, or the entire bottle is coated.
My friends threw out the empty bottle of Dom Perignon from their wedding reception. I snagged it and would like to slump something nice for them. If I had a way of re-using the label, that'd be great.
