Re: calculating the amount of glass for a mold
What you want to test is what the glass will look like. Small frit vs large frit, for example, will look very different. And different colors as well. Basically, before you spend a lot of money on glass, spend a little money with a smaller mold to make sure the color and transparency will be what yo...

Re: calculating the amount of glass for a mold
Get a container. Put water in it. Mark the level of the water. Pour some water into the mold. Mark the new, lower level of the water. Now fill the container with glass until the water raises to the original level (the first mark). That's how much glass you need. The smaller the pieces of glass you u...

Re: painting crisp, even thickness lines
There's not a huge difference in the way the Colorline paints work than the Sunshine.
To get an absolutely straight line, use a resist and paint through that, rather than by hand.

We use Sunshine Enamels. Mixed properly, they work like oil paints or acrylics.

Re: New Studio - New Kiln
I owned a Nabertherm GF240 fiber kiln for nearly 10 years. It performed flawlessly, required less electricity than a smaller brick kiln, and was my go-to kiln for larger projects. Nabertherm is German; the kiln has fiber sides and top, with a brick floor. The fiber is rigid, not blanket. I eventuall...

For fiber, top only should work.
For brick, both.

2mm is too thick. It will almost certainly crack.
No formula that I'm aware of. It would depend on the particular metal, of course.

Re: Using oxides as colorants
You can use anything that will mix with the oxides and that burns off cleanly in the kiln. Many glues will work or if you can get some ethyl methyl cellulose or carboxy methyl cellulose (CMC) you can make your own glue that will work well.Michael Stevens wrote:how could make the painting medium?

Re: Dichoric & iridized
has anyone tried to spray their own tin chloride? I have no access to iridized glass, I think it would be cool to add it to some of my scraps and make iridized frit bslla Yes, I've done this. It's fairly hazardous: https://beta-static.fishersci.com/content/dam/fishersci/en_US/documents/programs/edu...

Re: Are Armstrong Glass' COE 82 and Optul COE 82 the same product?
I'm pretty sure they're the same, made by OPTUL Spezialglas GmbH in Germany. As I recall, Armstrong imports their FloatFire from Germany. http://optul.de/en-arc-82.php The only place I know that carries it in the US is Armstrong, but you could contact OPTUL via their website and ask if they have ano...

Re: Using oxides as colorants
Can I mix with medium and paint with them? Can I sift them onto the glass like frit powder? What temperature does it need to set? Either method will work. Full fuse or close to that. Colors may change with different thicknesses. If sandwiched between glass, there will be some bubbling, which can be...

Re: Silver foil & leaf
I've used tarnished silver foil once before and it worked fine. Don't know if this is applicable to your situation, I was doing a reaction where the silver would change color anyway.
Given the thinness of the silver, I don't think there's any easy way to remove the tarnish.
